Beating the Heat in San Diego

This has been a very warm summer in San Diego. With a typical temperature range between 65-75 degrees, it is difficult to cope with heat nearing 100. Here are some good tips for staying cool.

San Diego Libraries have free AC and WiFi

Stay hydrated. Drink at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water each day.

Eat more fruits. Watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew.

Banana and Kiwi for potassium.

Use vinegar in cooking. This will help draw the heat out.

Use citrus. Lime and lemon beverages with mint . Squeeze some juice in a blender with ice and mint. Quick and easy!

Maintain electrolytes. Be sure you have salt and sugar in your diet.

Avoid direct sunlight between noon and 3pm.

Avoid shellfish and shark meats.

Get wet. Take a couple cool showers, mist yourself or get in the water.

Have fun this summer but please be safe! Sunstroke can be deadly and if you are feeling confused or disoriented, thirsty and stopped sweating, you may be in serious danger. Keep some water handy and drink it!
